Humberto, born in Caldas da Rainha, is the musical persona of Bruno Humberto, a composer and multidisciplinary artist. He studied and taught in the Master’s program in Performance Making at Goldsmiths College, London, where he co-founded the band Orchestra Elastique, with whom he performed internationally at festivals, museums, and cinemas.
With this collective, he composed the soundtrack for the film A Fallible Girl (2013), directed by Conrad Clark (premiered with a live concert at the Rotterdam International Film Festival), and released an EP and two albums. He collaborated on performances and sound installations with composer Allard van Hoorn at the Lisboa Soa Festival in 2016 and at the opening of MAAT (Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology) in 2017.
For choreographer Gustavo Ciríaco, he created the sound design for the latest version of Gentileza de um Gigante, presented at Festival Todos and Walk & Talk, as well as the sound composition for Cortado por todos os lados, aberto por todos os cantos, part of the 2018 Festival Alcântara at Teatro D. Maria II. He wrote, directed, and composed the music for The Camus Incident—a site-specific performance shortlisted for the Oxford Samuel Beckett Theatre Trust Award—and also for Holding Nothing, A Morte da Audiência, Peças, among others. He is also a member and founder of the band CATARATA.
With an indie-folk, pop sound, influenced by traditional Portuguese music and fado, Humberto presents the album MAU TEATRO, featuring several pieces inspired by the absurdity of everyday life—amplified in the public/political sphere and in love relationships. It evokes an intimate, shadowy universe, yet one that remains permeable to light. Failure, drama, joy, and catharsis coexist equally, feeding the songs of this album and continuing the voices introduced in his previous work, A DEMOLIÇÃO DAS CASAS (EP 2021).
From MAU TEATRO, highlights include PEÇA TRISTE, which addresses the rise of populism and the repetitive choreography of the pursuit of power, and FOLA, a word used by fishermen meaning “rough sea.” The latter is a song with a popular spirit and an activist backbone, reflecting the solidarity among those who grow up and live by the sea—a form of resistance etched into the landscape of Peniche.
